About the Oaks

Alison Buchan, MSW, RSW, CSAT

For almost 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of providing counselling support to clients. I focus on a wide range of concerns in the areas of depression, anxiety, self-injurious behaviours, grief/loss, survivors of sexual abuse and other childhood trauma, children of alcoholics/addicts, clients with chemical and sexual addictions, and other family-of-origin issues. My style is engaged and interactive; I work at being very collaborative, incorporating new techniques and concepts. Most of all, I understand that clients have the insight and skill to navigate toward personal change and counts it as my privilege to work with you.

In the field of social work, I’ve worked in a variety of settings including 12 years in the addictions & mental health program at the Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Partners; participated in community development in partnership with Northern Ontario First Nations communities; and managed research projects with The Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto.

I earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work at McMaster University and also continue my studies at the International Institute for Trauma & Addiction Professionals as a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. I’ve also trained at Toronto Institute of Relational Psychotherapy (TIRP), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute (SPI) and The Ferentz Institute. Additionally, I have enhanced trauma treatment training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Internal Family Systems therapy; and I have specialized training from the International Centre of Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and have received certification in smoking cessation from the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health. I integrate mindfulness-based approaches in all my work.

I am committed to ongoing professional development and continuing education and I’m available to clinicians who are interested in supervision.
